Yes, I have changed the adapter settings so it is now specifically tcp/ip on both machines (rather than the default)and rebooted - no change. The one with Windows 7 is in a domain as it is provided by my employer. As it turns out, it appears that there was an issue with the router that was in place. To my knowlege it was fully functional, but apparently it was not. I can go to a command prompt (as Administrator) and ping the other machine using the IP address.
