It's just when using the serial port it doesn't work. sudo can be used to run things as root from terminal or for X, it is just that gksu does the same with a gui popup for the password. Then I update the firmware, re-flash the Photon, and start a new puTTY session. You're also right about the vagaries of Windows OS's.

Security is not a problem until it is connected to a network. Linux identifies inbuilt serial ports as /dev/ttyS0, /dev/ttyS1,….. /dev/ttySn and USB-to-Serial adapters as /dev/ttyUSB0, …. /dev/ttyUSBn and they can be accessed using terminal emulator applications like PuTTY, minicom and screen.Normally when I don't think I would've figured this out on my own. On Windows, addressing a COM port greater than COM9 requires special addressing. Dragging the cloned repository folder into SourceTree shows me the repository details, but I get the same error again when I try to fetch or pull that cloned repository in SourceTree. Isn't PuTTY a "network" terminal client (does it even do serial directly?)?
