I can no install any perl module using the cpan shell. Explanation of the packages the shell script tests for Perl is definitely required. This is not an exhaustive list. You very likely need this. However I wonder what is really going on here, because the first three lines quoted above do not come out of perl when I run "perl Makefile.PL". You mentioned in your first post that you're using a newly-installed 5.8.4, as opposed to the 5.8.1 that your system shipped with.
