After some time I spotted my problem. Don't think I've even tried to shut down or restart in over a year without going ahead and quitting Mail first. BTW KillAll Dock will reset your dock and kill all your dashboard widgets. How long have you owned or used the Mac?

If mail.app isn't playing nicely, you could always use a third party email program like thunderbird. Apple doesn't seem to support Mail anymore.
