Unable To Open Media Player In Windows 7
I've seen this issue mentioned by many people on several forums, but I haven't found anything but a very temporary fix. If you're seeing elsewhere that a device isn't shutting down or waking up correctly, it would be fairly logical to believe that the two might be related. I tried again to uninstall WMP after a boot, without ever starting WMP (still-working mode). I've tried downloading it again, transfering working files from another computer, the suggestions above and still nothing works. Source
This kind of thing is hard to troubleshoot randomly over a forum, but I'd probably suggest something like downloading the Windows Debugging SDK, running WMP under windbg, closing WMP ... then it all starts over again.. I can right click the file and open with VLC and would play immediately. My setting when the problem was occurring was that HTTP was set to "Use proxy settings of the Web Browser" This, apparently, was causing the problem.

Windows media player sucks at remembering codecs, there's some websites that have "codec fixers." I did that on my vista using some russian one. I tried your suggestion and it worked like a charm. They'll gain access but then will lose it. All research I've done into this(at least in the Microsoft world points to Link Layer Topology. Do you mean you turned windows media player off in windows programs and features? My last resort was to use other players, but I liked WMP as it used DFX Audio Enhancement plug in.
